Welcome to Benton Middle Magnet School - A Visual and Performing Arts Academy

Welcome to the 2013-14 school year!  As I enter my first year as principal, I am truly honored to be joining the extraordinarily talented students and staff of Benton Middle Magnet School. At Benton, students receive standards-based instruction in their core academic classes and electives from highly qualified teachers and industry experts.  With an emphasis on Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA), students are given the unique opportunity to develop their skills in a variety of VAPA courses.

This year’s theme, “Setting the Stage for Stardom,” captures the essence of what Benton is all about.  The entire Benton staff works tirelessly to provide students with experiences that allow them to shine.  Throughout the year, students will take center stage as singers, dancers, actors, musicians, artists, photographers, designers, leaders, readers, writers, speakers, scientists, historians, mathematicians, and more.

As principal, I am committed to ensuring a safe, positive, and rigorous learning environment where every student belongs.  To accomplish this, the entire Benton community must unite to provide our students with the best possible middle school experience so that they are prepared for high school and beyond.  As we implement the new Common Core State Standards, it is critical that we work together to increase student achievement.  This year, we have adopted three schoolwide commitments of which all students and staff will incorporate into daily life at Benton: collaboration, critical thinking, and perseverance.  These three commitments will serve to meet the Common Core outcomes of college and career readiness.

Please join us as we continue to support our students throughout their middle school journey.  I invite you to get involved with the various activities, events, and committees, such as Shared Decision-Making Council (SDMC), Parent-Teacher-Student Association (PTSA), and English-Language Advisory Committee (ELAC).  Communication between the school and community is a priority, so please do not hesitate to contact us at (562) 943-1553.
