Welcome to the LCMS Music Page. I am Mr. Gohn, the director of music at Los Coyotes Middle School. Our music program consists of three bands (Concert, Symphonic and Wind Ensemble) and two world percussion classes.
The World Percussion class focuses on not only call and response rhythm learning, but also on reading and writing rhythms. We go through the evolution on learning music from learning by rote (copy/paste) to reading written music (notation). The students will learn prescribed 'grooves' in the beginning of the year/trimester, leading towards composing their own 'grooves' and, eventually, their own percussion arrangements incorporating not only the world percussion instruments they've been exposed to but the symphonic percussion instruments as well.
Our band program has been the constant hallmark of our music department. Since the school's forming, our band program has consistently represented not only Los Coyotes Middle School but the district as a whole in the upper echelons of music throughout the state of California. Each year, we have a multitude of students accepted it into our district honor band with many of them seated towards the top of their instrumental section. I have seen several students make it into SCSBOA's All-South Honor Band and CBDA's All-State Honor Band... often repeating the accomplishment as they move from middle school into high school. Our Festival Ensemble (now Wind Ensemble) has performed numerous times at Disneyland as guests of the theme park... an honor reserved for only outstanding programs. Our Forum Concert Band has never scored less than a Silver Rating at our annual Forum Festival trip. Last, but definitely not least, we our the only school in our district to attend the SCSBOA Regional Festival, the highest achievement possible, for a record 9 years in a row. On top of that wonderful accomplishment, we also became the first and only middle school in our district's history to make it into the Regional Festival as a Class C Band in 2011... the highest possible category for a middle school and the only class shared with high schools.
